Five lancets are provided with every pack of CareSens test strips when prescribed by a doctor in New Zealand and reimbursed through the Pharmaceutical Schedule. The lancets fit the lancing device provided with the CareSens meters. Additional Lancets are available in packs of 100 from pharmacies; these are not funded on the Pharmaceutical Schedule.
Some advice on using lancets:
- Do not share lancets with other people. Lancets are only sterile at the time of first use. Sharing lancets can result in transfer of bacteria and viruses between you and others.
- Store safely out of the reach of children
- Dispose of your lancets in a sharps container. If you are being treated with insulin, you can dispose of your lancets in the same sharps container you use for your insulin needles and syringes.
- When the lancet is getting blunt, use a new lancet.
- Best practice is to use a new, sterile lancet each time you test. Purchasing more lancets is a small price to pay for safety and prevention of infection.
Using a lancing device. - Unscrew the tip of the lancing device and insert the lancet into the carrier. Twist off the protective disk on the end of the lancet. Save disk to recap lancet after use.
- Screw the tip back onto the barrel.
- Set the depth that you want to use; in thicker skin areas use a higher number; in thin sensitive skin areas use a lower number.
- Wash your hands and fingers with soap and warm water. Rinse and dry thoroughly.
- To cock the lancing device, hold the tip in one hand and pull the sliding barrel with the other hand. The lancing device is cocked when you feel a click.
- Place cocked lancing device against side of fingertip. Chose a different fingertip each time you test.
- Press the release button. Massage fingertip to get a round drop of blood. Apply CareSens test strip pointed end to blood sample (see instruction manuals for CareSens POP or CareSens II meters on how to use the CareSens test strips in the CareSens meters)

In New Zealand, CareSens Test Strips are reimbursed on the pharmaceutical schedule. Each pack of 50 test strips comes with 5 lancets; so each time you get your prescription dispensed you will have new sterile lancets to use. The lancets when prescribed with the CareSens Test Strips are reimbursed too. All you will pay is your usual pharmacy dispensing fee.
